From the Director

As we celebrate the “Week of the Young Child,” it is important for us to revisit our commitment to this important segment of our population. Since young children are unable to tell leaders what they want and need, they are often ignored. Our voices must be raised as advocates for these children who are in such a critical stage of development.

Intensive and longitudinal studies have clearly shown that what happens to children during these early years will impact them for the rest of their lives. At-risk young children, who are in quality programs, have higher intellectual performance, stay in school longer, have a higher high school graduation rate, and are less likely to be involved in crimes. Our investment in young children, today, will have a positive impact on their future and our society. As discussions focus on budget cuts and war, we lose sight of what is truly important–our children.

Let us restate our commitment to young children by informing our leaders of the programs and experiences that are needed. Let us value and support the teachers, caregivers, and parents who influence the lives of these young children. Let us work together to provide quality environments that will nurture all children’s learning and emotional well-being. Together, we can make a difference for young children.

In this issue, we have featured two important components of our Center of Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development: The Child Study Center and Little Buccaneers Student Childcare Center. We honor the contributions of dedicated people who are making these environments wonderful places for young children to grow and develop.
